Toxic Multinodular Goiter

Toxic multinodular goiter (TMNG), also known as multinodular toxic goiter (MNTG), is an active multinodular

goiter

associated with

hyperthyroidism

. It is a common cause of hyperthyroidism. In which there is excess production of thyroid hormones from functionally autonomous thyroid nodules, which do not require stimulation from thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
It is the second most common cause of hyperthyroidism (after Graves' disease) in the developed world, whereas iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in developing-world countries where the population is iodine-deficient.

Treatment
1-Radioiodine therapy. One treatment for both toxic and non-toxic goiters is radioiodine therapy. 2-Thyroid medication. If the goiter and its nodules are relatively small in size, a doctor may recommend taking a thyroid hormone medication, such as levothyroxine (Synthroid). 3-Thyroidectomy: typically involves removal of the entire thyroid, especially if nodules are present on both sides of the thyroid or the thyroid is enlarged and causing pressure in the neck or difficulty with swallowing.
