In severe cases, the blood supply might be compromised, and the bowel tissues might die. This is a life-threatening situation.

Treatment
The management of bowel obstruction depends upon the etiology, severity, and location of the obstruction. The goals of initial management are to relieve discomfort and restore normal fluid volume and electrolytes. Treatment includes

fluids, bowel rest with nothing to eat (NPO), and, sometimes, bowel decompression through a

nasogastric tube
