Primary Aldosteronism

Primary aldosteronism means the

adrenal glands

produce too much of the steroid hormone

aldosterone

. Primary aldosteronism usually manifests with high blood pressure and low potassium levels in the blood. Left unchecked, high blood pressure raises your risk for complications including heart attack and stroke, while low potassium can cause heart rhythm irregularities.
Early diagnosis and management, often involving medication and lifestyle changes, are crucial for controlling blood pressure and preventing potential complications associated with excessive aldosterone production.
Symptoms

Treatment
The major goals of therapy for primary aldosteronism are (1) normalization of blood pressure, (2) normalization of levels of serum potassium and other electrolytes, and (3) normalization of serum aldosterone levels. The appropriate treatment for primary aldosteronism depends on its cause. Pharmacological treatment include medications like spirinolacone (brand name Aldactone®) or eplerenone (Inspra®) which block the effects of aldosterone, and anti hypertensive medications. Surgical treatment by removing the adrenal gland can be beneficial in some cases of primary aldosteronism. Your doctor may also recommend lifestyle changes, including: Frequent exercise. Limiting alcohol intake. Reducing sodium in your diet. Stopping smoking.
