Melanoma

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops from the pigment-producing cells known as Melanocytes. Melanomas typically occur in the skin, but may rarely occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye (uveal melanoma). In women, they most commonly occur on the legs, while in men, they most commonly occur on the back.
The primary cause of Melanoma is ultraviolet light (UV) exposure in those with low levels of skin pigment melanin.

Treatment
Surgery to remove the tumor is the primary treatment of all stages of melanoma. A wide local excision is used to remove the melanoma and some of the normal tissue around it. Skin grafting (taking skin from another part of the body to replace the skin that is removed) may be done to cover the wound caused by surgery.
