Histoplasmosis

Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by breathing in spores of a fungus often found in bird and bat droppings. People usually get it from breathing in these spores when they become airborne during demolition or cleanup projects
For most people, the symptoms of histoplasmosis will go away within a few weeks to a month.
Symptoms

Fever

  • Greater than or equal to 38°C (100.4°F)

  • With chills

Chest discomfort

  • Center of the chest

  • Occurs or worsens with deep inspiration

Cough with mucus or without mucus

  • Dry

  • Lasting 3 weeks or less, Lasting 4 weeks or more

Fatigue

or Muscle pain

Headache

Poor appetite

or Weight loss

Skin rash and redness

  • At legs not feet

or Red lesions filled with pus

  • At lower extremity

Perceived distortion of visual space

or Transient visual loss

Abdominal mass

  • Located in middle upper region, Left upper region, Right upper quadrant, Center of abdomen

Joint pain

Swallowing difficulties

or Painful swallowing

Risk factors

Moist soil containing bats or birds stool

or Live or travel from or to an endemic area of histoplasmosis

HIV infection

or Chemotherapy

or Use of steroids

Treatment
For some people, the symptoms of histoplasmosis will go away without treatment. However, prescription antifungal medication is needed to treat severe histoplasmosis in the lungs, chronic histoplasmosis, and infections that have spread from the lungs to other parts of the body (disseminated histoplasmosis).
