Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is the inflammation of the

epiglottis

and adjacent supraglottic structures. It is most frequently caused by infection, although caustic ingestion, thermal injury, and local trauma are important noninfectious etiologies.
Without treatment, epiglottitis can progress to life-threatening airway obstruction.
Symptoms

Fever

  • Greater than or equal to 38°C (100.4°F), Less than 38°C (100.4°F)

  • Rapidly developing

Pain, scratchiness or irritation of the throat

or Painful swallowing

Swallowing difficulties

Feeling agitated

Excessive saliva flowing

Thick voice

No Hib vaccine

Drug or substance abuse

Treatment
1-Intravenous fluids for nutrition and hydration until you're able to swallow again. 2-Antibiotics to treat a known or suspected bacterial infection. 3-Anti-inflammatory medication, such as corticosteroids, to reduce the swelling in your throat.
