Encephalitis is an

inflammation

of the brain tissue. The most common cause is viral infections. In rare cases, it can be caused by bacteria or even fungi.
Encephalitis can be life-threatening and requires urgent treatment in the hospital.

Treatment
Encephalitis caused by certain viruses usually requires antiviral treatment. Treatment for mild encephalitis usually consists of: 1-Bed rest. 2-Plenty of fluids. 3-Anti-inflammatory drugs — such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium — to relieve headaches and fevers. People who are hospitalized with severe encephalitis might need: 1-Breathing assistance. 2-Intravenous fluids. 3-Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as corticosteroids, to reduce swelling and pressure within the skull. 4-Anticonvulsant medications.
