Infantile Meningitis

Neonatal meningitis is the

inflammation

of the

meninges

during the first 28 days of life. Meningitis is typically caused by infection with

microorganisms

Meningitis is very serious and can be fatal.
Symptoms

Feeling agitated

or Child is constantly crying

Lack of sleep

or Confusion

Baby not feeling hungry

Difficulty moving neck

common

Fever

  • Greater than or equal to 38°C (100.4°F), Less than 38°C (100.4°F)

Skin rash and redness

Bulging of the soft spots of skull

Treatment
Antibiotic choices for neonatal meningitis include ampicillin and gentamicin or cefotaxime. For infants younger than 8 days old, the dose for Ampicillin is 150 mg/kg per day divided every 8 hours, plus gentamicin 4 mg/kg daily or cefotaxime 100 to 150 mg/kg per day divided every 8 to 12 hours.
