Otitis Media

Acute Otitis Media (AOM) is the

inflammation

of the

middle ear

caused by infection.
Otitis media often comes from a simple cold. It’s hard to prevent colds, but good hygiene can help lower your chance of catching one.
Symptoms

Ear pain

or Child pulls on or rubs the ear repeatedly

common

Feeling agitated

or Child is constantly crying

common

Poor appetite

or Lack of sleep

or Baby not feeling hungry

common

Fever

  • Greater than or equal to 38°C (100.4°F), Less than 38°C (100.4°F)

  • Rapidly developing

common

Throwing up

or Diarrhea

common

Difficulty hearing

  • In one ear

common

Risk factors

Recent upper respiratory tract infection

or Inflammation of the nose caused by allergy

Family history of recurrent Otitis Media

Cleft lip and/or cleft palate

Treatment
AOM is typically treated with antibiotics.
